Definition
A refrigerant is the working fluid in a heat pump or air conditioner that absorbs heat when it evaporates at low pressure and releases it when it condenses at high pressure. Its properties set the achievable flow temperature, efficiency, safety class and climate impact. Common heat pump refrigerants include R32 (an HFC) and R290 (propane, a natural refrigerant).
