Definition
A drainback system is a pumped solar thermal system in which the collector fluid drains by gravity into a reservoir whenever the pump stops, leaving the collectors and exposed pipes empty. This protects against freezing and stagnation without antifreeze and simply halts collection when the tank is full, which is valuable in hot climates. It requires continuously sloping pipework and a pump able to refill the collectors on start-up.
