Definition
An expansion vessel is a closed tank with a gas-filled membrane that absorbs the volume increase of water or glycol as it heats up, keeping the system pressure within safe limits. Solar expansion vessels are sized to hold the entire collector fluid volume as well, so that steam formation during stagnation cannot lift the safety valve. Heating and DHW systems each need their own vessel matched to volume, temperature and pressure.
